Universal project task runner. Auto-detects toolchain, provides unified CLI.
- Site: https://runner.kjanat.com/ — landing page; source in
site/ - npm:
runner-run—npm install -g runner-run
- Auto-detection: Scans for lockfiles/configs and picks the right tool
- Unified interface: Same workflow across npm/yarn/pnpm/bun/cargo/deno/uv/poetry/pipenv/go/bundler/composer
- Task aggregation: Lists tasks from package.json/package.json5/package.yaml, Makefile, justfile, Taskfile, turbo.json, deno.json, deno.jsonc
- Deterministic task routing: Prefers turbo task, then package.json, then other matching sources
- Monorepo aware: Detects workspaces (turbo, nx, pnpm, npm/yarn workspaces, Cargo workspaces)
- Resilient detection: Surfaces non-fatal parse/read warnings in info/list/run output
- Safe clean defaults: Skips framework build dirs unless explicitly requested
- Node version checking: Warns on .nvmrc/.node-version mismatch
Package managers (detect + install + run): npm, yarn, pnpm, bun, cargo, deno, uv, poetry, pipenv, go, bundler, composer
Task sources (list + run): package manifests (package.json,
package.json5, package.yaml) scripts, turbo.json tasks/pipeline, Makefile,
justfile, Taskfile, deno.json, deno.jsonc
Task-runner detection signals: turbo, nx, make, just, go-task, mise
Note: nx and mise are currently detection-only (metadata/monorepo context), not direct task execution backends.
runner # show detected project info
runner <task> [-- <args...>] # run task (falls back to PM exec)
run <task> [-- <args...>] # alias binary: always runs as task/exec
runner run <target> [-- <args...>] # explicit unified task/exec form
runner install [--frozen] # install deps via detected PM
runner clean [-y] [--include-framework]
runner list [--raw] # list tasks (raw = one name per line)
runner completions [<shell>] [-o <path>]runner run <target> resolves to a defined task first; if none matches, it
falls back to executing <target> as a command through the detected package
manager (npx, pnpm exec, bunx, cargo, uv run, …). The run binary
is a shortcut for runner run — unlike runner, it never parses positional
arguments as built-in subcommands, so run clean or run install always
runs the matching task/command.
When a task shadows a built-in (clean, install, list, info,
completions), the shorthand runner <name> runs the task. To force the
built-in, pass a flag it recognises (e.g. runner install --frozen,
runner clean -y, runner list --raw) or use the short alias (runner i,
runner ls).
From npm (prebuilt binaries, no Rust toolchain required):
npm install -g runner-runThe npm package is a façade that pulls in a per-platform sub-package
(@runner-run/<platform>-<arch>) via optionalDependencies. npm filters by
each sub-package's os/cpu/libc fields, so only the binary for your
machine is installed — no postinstall script, no network at install time.
Supports Linux (gnu+musl, x64/arm64/armv7), macOS (x64/arm64), Windows
(x64/arm64/ia32), and experimental BSD builds (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD;
see npm/targets.json for per-target tier).
From source via Cargo:
# installs both binaries: runner + run
cargo install --path .
# Or from git
cargo install --git=https://github.com/kjanat/runner/ runnerOr use the convenience installer script (latest or pinned version):
curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kjanat/runner/master/install.sh
bash install.sh # latest release
bash install.sh 0.1.0 # pinned release
# also works: bash install.sh v0.1.0Details
# Optional: custom destination dir
RUNNER_INSTALL_DIR="$HOME/.local/bin" bash install.sh
# Install dir precedence:
# RUNNER_INSTALL_DIR -> XDG_BIN_HOME -> ~/.local/binOr use the dev wrapper:
./bin/runner <args>
./bin/run <args>
# If direnv is set up, just run:
runner <args>mkdir -p ~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions
runner completions bash > ~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions/runner
mkdir -p ~/.zfunc
runner completions zsh > ~/.zfunc/_runner
# add once to ~/.zshrc:
# fpath=(~/.zfunc $fpath)
# autoload -Uz compinit && compinit
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish/completions
runner completions fish > ~/.config/fish/completions/runner.fish
# If you use the `run` alias binary, replace `runner` with `run`
# and output to matching completion filenames.MIT © 2026 Kaj Kowalski
