I originally experimented with borrowing tracing functionality from OpenTelemetry SDK, ignoring the fact that it's such a heavyweight package and we don't need 99% of what it does. Unfortunately the 1% that we need (
Tracer,TracerProvider) turned out to not be flexible enough for my needs, and it's less code to actually implement simple tracing from scratch.
