What to pack?

  • Laptop with the following capabilities
    • A wireless connectivity, the venue has a free wifi
    • A web browser
    • A ssh terminal; see instructions here
  • Relaxed clothing
    • The day temperature will be likely around 20 °C but could be anywhere between 10 to 30 °C. Bringing an umbrella and/or a rain coat will not be a totally bad idea. Neither will a sunscreen. Check the weather forecast before departure e.g. at https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/local-weather/espoo/nuuksio?forecast=long.
    • No dress code whatsoever for the school or any of the social events; please have a relaxed outfit.
    • No laundry service available
  • Outdoor clothing
    • See the notes about leisure activities below and bring suitable outfit.
  • A swimming suit
    • The venue is by lake
  • Electricity converter if needed
  • Boardgames, card games, frisbee discs, etc - there will be a lot of good company around for social activities.
  • Any extra/special items you might need
    • Note that there is no shops anywhere near the venue, but there will be plenty of food and drinks served throughout the summer school.
  • There may be some mosquitoes around (not dangerous in any manner, only annoying). Taking some antihistamine daily will help in reducing the itching of the bites. Consider bringing some repellent if you are really annoyed by those buggers.

Outdoor activities (and indoors too)

In addition to the instructed activities in the schedule, you have plenty of other possibilities.

  • There are very nice jogging and mountain biking routes. (Mountain bikes not available, but feel free to bring your own if you have.)
  • The hotel has facilities and provides accessories for various activities
    • Football
    • Frisbee golf
    • Rowing
    • Mölkky
    • Swimming
    • Gym
    • Some board games

Lightning talks

On the first day of the school the floor will be yours for lightning talks. Lightning talks are:

  • Informal (we'll have some snacks and drinks at the same time)
  • Introductory (to put a face to the name; you can share your hobbies, research interest, or anything else you want people to know about you)
  • Short (< 1 minute per person)

For the lightning talks, you should prepare a one-page PDF slide. The design is entirely up to you. Feel free to include images, text, drawings, or your favorite xkcd strip! The only mandatory item in the slide is your name.

Please send the PDF to Tuomas Rossi (CSC) via email by the day before the school starts. Include in your message whether it's okay to share your slide with the school participants. A quick note like "okay to share the PDF with the school participants" or "do not share the PDF with the school participants" is enough.

Miscellaneous practical notes

  • Last, but not least: Clean your desk before departing to the school! The school will be very intensive so you really want to minimize the time spent on duties you drag with you from your office. Either your learning experience or the work you think you would be doing during the school will suffer (probably both).
