Encoding Directions

Information describing the material of an object is located at fileDesc/sourceDesc/msDesc/physDesc/objectDesc/supportDesc/@ana.

In the author mode template, select the material from a drop-down list (controlled vocabulary). Most often the material will be marble or stone (other). Be as accurate as possible, indicating if applicable that you are uncertain of the object's material. The categories of material of the text-carrying object are:

• marble
• stone (other)
• terracotta (unglazed)
• ceramic (glazed)
• clay (other)
• bronze / copper alloy
• lead
• gold
• silver
• metal (other)
