A little bit background for people who are seeing this repo for the first time: this is my little fork of the compton compositor. Since the original compton repo (chjj/compton) is mostly abandoned, I decided to take on the task of keeping compton alive. In fact, I've been doing this for about 8 months now. Some distros have picked up this repo, but most haven't, so you probably are not currently using this compton fork. But I still want to hear your voice anyways :)

Motivation

compton has accumulated a lot of cruft over the years: useless options, workarounds for old bugs, support for old hardwares, etc. But I cannot remove them with confidence, because I have no idea what kind of hardware compton users use.

Basically, I want to collect information from the users of compton to help me make decisions. Such as, what I could remove from picom, what kind of hardware should I optimize for, what kind of hardware requirements could picom reasonably have, etc.

Questions

Here are some general questions I would like answers for:

• How old is your system?
• What hardware (CPU, GPU, etc) does your system have?
• Are you using up-to-date software on your system? Is your graphic driver the latest?
• Does your system require a more "advanced" setup? For example, does it use NVIDIA Optimus?
• What version of picom are you using right now? And is it working well for you?
  • Does both backends (xrender and glx) work? How do they perform?
• What options do you have to use, because picom won't work correctly otherwise?
• What OpenGL versions does your system support? What OpenGL extensions are supported (glxinfo)?

Of course, you don't have to stick to those questions. You don't have to answer all of them. If you have other information, you are welcomed to send them as well.

looks like I'm going to start.

Note: I have two machines I use regularly, so I'm going to answer some of the questions twice. If there's only one answer, it applies to both machines

Note2: I'm an on-off compton user. I switch between i3wm (Xorg) and Sway (Wayland). As I mostly care about tearing prevention, I also just use TearFree instead of a compositor on X. However, TearFree is unreliable on Intel, so I use compton more on the laptop. Hoever, I haven't kept up with your releases and barely maintain my config for quite some time, so please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

• How old is your system?

  1. Can't say for sure, as components come and go. Base system ~2 years old
  2. The laptop is ~1 year old

• What hardware (CPU, GPU, etc) does your system have?

  1. AMD Zen 1st generation ("Ryzen 1xxx"), AMD Polaris GPU
  2. Intel Kaby Lake-R ("8th gen Core i"), Intel Gen9 graphics

• Are you using up-to-date software on your system? Is your graphic driver the latest?
  Yes (stable, not -git or other development builds). Arch Linux (rolling release)

• Does your system require a more "advanced" setup? For example, does it use NVIDIA Optimus?
  No, I deliberately forego stuff like this.
  I'm not sure if you consider a 144 Hz monitor as part of an advanced setup. I think it shouldn't be nowadays but e.g. GNOME only very recently supports something else than 60 Hz on Wayland.

• What version of compton are you using right now? And is it working well for you?
  This fork, version 5.1 (officially packaged Arch version). I'm not sure. I don't like the input lag e.g. very noticeable while moving stuff around with a mouse as it trails behind the hardware cursor. I rarely do that though as I'm using a tiling wm. The eye candy effects seem a bit outdated, especially blur.

• Does both backends (xrender and glx) work? How do they perform?
  IIRC, both work but glx performs better, have to check on both devices.
  Do you have any kind of performance test plan in mind or just subjective ratings? I'm not too happy with the performance. There is the mentioned input lag and occasional stuttering, however I'm not sure to which degree it's compton's fault.

• What options do you have to use, because compton won't work correctly otherwise?
  I have a pretty basic setup, disable blur, shadows, fading, use the glx backend and vsync=opengl-swc

• What OpenGL versions does your system support? What OpenGL extensions are supported (glxinfo)?
  4.5. I think I'll just link to https://mesamatrix.net/ instead of listing all the supported extensions. The radeonsi and i965 data applies because it's the most recent Intel gen and I use recent Mesa versions.

PS: Have you considered announcing this poll on other channels e.g. relevant subreddits, mailing lists, forums? For example, your fork is the officially packaged compton version for Arch and ~20% have it installed. Of course those stats are opt-in so don't take it for granted. I'm not sure how much of those users even know that they use a fork and even less would regularly check this GitHub page.

My system's relatively recent and decent (i7 6700k, 16GB RAM, RX 580, SSD) and I'm on Arch Linux with the very latest package versions of most things.
As you might have already noticed, I can't wait to have the newest enhancements in any graphics or performance critical components and thus often end up reporting issues with e.g. the latest amd-wip kernel and so on. ;)
It's a single display system with a single GPU active (FOSS drivers only), which should be one reason why I usually only read of problems instead of having them. I suppose multi-monitor could be "fun" to find additional issues with drivers and xorg.

The main reason I use Compton is because I consider the Xorg compositor of KWin as completely unusable in terms of performance (stuttering in applications) and also the lack of auto-unredirect for fullscreen windows drives me crazy. KWin on Wayland is a dream compared to the Xorg version, but I'm not happy yet with Wayland sessions for various reasons (xwayland only rendering with fixed 60fps fake-vsync for windowed programs, clipboard headaches etc.)

I think the fading feature of Compton could use some love. I can't get it to look like a totally smooth animation which runs with full fps/refreshrate. Maybe it could be simplified to always look as smooth as possible and as a user, you could simply configure the duration of the "animation"?

Intel UHD 620 + Quadro P600. I use the Intel most of the time with the Quadro disabled.

Are you using up-to-date software on your system? Is your graphic driver the latest?

Yes very up to date as I'm using openSUSE TumbleWeed which is a rolling distro.
Driver is a recent xf86-video-intel git snapshot: 2.99.917+git8674.25c9a2fcc

Does your system require a more "advanced" setup? For example, does it use NVIDIA Optimus?

laptop is Optimus but since I almost only use the iGPU I rarely use optimus. Occasionally I use the NVIDIA proprietry driver to drive an external monitor.

What version of compton are you using right now? And is it working well for you?

v0.1.0 packaged by the distro, in conjunction with the xf86-video-intel driver, using its TearFree option.
I'm running a minimal Xorg session with i3wm as the window manager. That setup can be used without a compositor but that can result in some bugs in certains apps such as Eclipse (GTK3) where discarding dialog windows results in visual glitches and some part of the screen sometimes not repainted properly. Using compton fixes this, but introduce jank in Firefox scrolling. I can get Firefox to scroll beautifully at 60 fps but whenever I enable any compositor, it causes jank. No matter what compton settings are used. Firefox itself is setup with layers.acceleration.force-enabled=true.
I wish I where able to use compton without it getting in the way with Firefox regarding scrolling performance. That's my biggest annoyance at the moment and why most of the time I do not use any compositor and deal with the Eclipse repaint glitches.

Here's my main annoyances:

• the Firefox scrolling performance mentioned above when compton is running
• the difficulty to get rid of tearing with compositors when this is not done at the driver level (Intel OSS driver and NVIDIA driver only. The modesetting driver requires the compositor to do it). It's insane people have to fight with tearing in 2019...

I wonder if that's just because the xrender backend is not performing very well? From my experience, the xrender backend can be quite slow on Intel cards.

I think I've seen some glitches with glx but it's been a long time I tried.

If you have time, maybe give it a try again? Try build from this repo. If the glitch still exists, feel free to open a issue.

  Yes, I use Bumblebee for NVIDIA Optimus, though not really often and definitely not for Compton.
• What version of compton are you using right now? And is it working well for you?
  Compton 5.1 (it's Your fork provided by Arch Linux), works quite well with KDE Plasma + i3-gaps instead of KWin.
• Does both backends (xrender and glx) work? How do they perform?
  Haven't tried xrender.
• What options do you have to use, because compton won't work correctly otherwise?
  unredir-if-possible = true, otherwise videos will sometimes freeze in media players or Firefox (haven't tested other browsers) when fullscreen.

  I'm on a pretty old laptop. It's an X220 so about 8 or 7 years, I would say.

  The CPU is a Sandybridge i5 (i5-2520M) which has an Intel HD 3000 GPU built into it.

• Are you using up-to-date software on your system? Is your graphic driver the latest?
  I'm on a rolling release distro so I'm getting pretty much the latest (stable version) of everything.

• Does your system require a more "advanced" setup? For example, does it use NVIDIA Optimus?
  Not really, it's just a laptop with with an Intel CPU and Intel Graphics. Pretty much the most Linux-friendly as it gets in terms of hardware.

• What version of compton are you using right now? And is it working well for you?
  As of writing, I'm using version 5.1 from this repo because it's what my distro had packaged. It's working fine as usual, I didn't even notice they switched upstream sources.

• Does both backends (xrender and glx) work? How do they perform?
  Both backends work quite well for me. I only use the glx backend now, but I have to say that the xrender backend has never given me problems, and it's a good fallback when you have subpar hardware. I found it useful when I was on an old netbook sporting the GMA3600--an old PowerVR GPU used on early Intel Atoms which never had proper drm drivers--that was badly tearing.
  I couldn't use the Intel Xorg driver's TearFree option because the GPU wasn't an Intel one in the first place. That meant I had to use a compositor. Compton was a good fit for that. However, the problem was, it ran really slowly on the glx backend (again, this specific GPU never had proper drivers, couldn't even play anything above 720p). Good thing compton had a good fallback xrender backend, and it was a lifesaver. I guess my point here is just that please don't ever remove the xrender backend. Probably no one ever uses it now with their modern hardware, but that doesn't mean it's useless for everyone.
  I mentioned I only use the glx backend now, but I have to say that with my current hardware, I could only use it with the options vsync = "opengl-swc" and sw-opti = true. Otherwise, I'd get slight tearing when playing videos (even non-HD ones). I'm not really sure why this is. Though, it might just be because the HD 3000 is a really old GPU.

• What options do you have to use, because compton won't work correctly otherwise?
  Other than the options I mentioned previously, the only "must-have" settings I really need are the shadow-exclude options. There's a bunch of exclusions you have to add in order to make shadows look nice. For instance, if I don't have "class_g = 'Firefox' && argb" on the exclusions, the menu shadowing doesn't show up correctly. That said, I'm not really sure who should be fixing what here, so don't think I can complain too much.

• What OpenGL versions does your system support? What OpenGL extensions are supported?

yshui developed a (completely?) new, yet experimental xrender backend, which will be a great choice on Mesa drivers for great performance, fixing of tearing and low input latency at the same time. :)
Except of a crashing issue, it already works flawlessly for me.

I compiled compton from this repo.
The problem is identical: if I run compton and whatever the backend (tried them all), Firefox scrolling is jerky, and I'd say it's worse than stock compton. It's super smooth as soon as I kill compton (a Firefox restart is not even needed).
I have a question: is vsync is enabled by default ? I see only a --vsync option to turn it on while old compton had --vsync none.
I wonder if the TearFree option of the "intel" driver is not getting in the way. I will try with the "modesetting" driver and report.

@bubbleguuum The old xrender backend has no vsync support, you'd have to rely on TearFree for it (unlike with GLX).
TearFree can have its own bag of bugs though, you'd probably report it to the Intel devs if you can reproducibly link the problem to it.

vsync is disabled by default. So if you pass no option on command line, and don't set vsync to true in config file, it's disabled.

I have tried with the "modesetting" driver alongside "compton --backend glx --vsync" and it fixed the problem: Firefox scrolling is smooth as silk (perceived 60fps most of the time, layers.acceleration.force-enabled=true) and without tearing.
So there's a weird interaction going on with the "intel" driver that kills scroll performance and is not specific to a particular backend.
For the time being, i will use the "modesetting" driver since it works nicely.

  The xrender doesn't require any additional configuration but induces massive tearing and scrolling feels slow.
  The glx required multiple iterations of configuration tweak&test but feels snappy and tear free.

  These are a must with the glx backend. Otherwise black flickering usually appears during certain operations like a new window creation after some time.

How do they perform?: glx works only for DP-1 and DP-2 it seems (I haven't tried swapping the plugs and seeing if that's actually true, but what I mean is that it works only with the monitors currently identified as those two). xrender works on all three monitors but --vsync doesn't actually work or give me any vsync (still get tearing when I drag windows around).

Thank you for your work of supporting picom, it helped my fix some issues with firefox/telegram, that was lagging on my laptop, until I've installed picom. It fixed the lags, don't even know what was the root cause :D
I've used picom on laptop (dell xps 15" 2018) and tried (but decided not to use) on desktop.

For HD graphics - yes.
For nvidia - disabled it via bumblebee when installed the system, so I do not even remember what driver I used in combination with it. If my memory serves me right it was proprietary driver from arch repos (or AUR).

I tried prime rendering offload with official drivers, but it consumed slightly more power (in comparison to hd graphics and disabled nvidia), so I decided not to use it - do not need GPU for anything except basic X11+i3wm on laptop.
So my "advanced" setup is just enabled bumblebee.

Latest available version of picom in arch repos at that moment. Yes.

Sadly it works really slow, with different configs and toggles. So decided not to use it at the moment.

When I tried to run xrender I've got black screen and can't do anything (killed shell with launched picom via hotkey).
glx is working, but framerate is unstable. It averages on 110..120 with occasional drops to 40..50, which is noticeable (in comparison to x11+i3wm stable 144Hz).

What options do you have to use, because compton won't work correctly otherwise?

Well it wasn't able to start with default xrender, so I was needed to use glx.

picom 8.2-1 community (manjaro) is working reasonably well. Details below.

Does both backends (xrender and glx) work? How do they perform?

xrender and glx both work. xrender causes screen tearing. glx occasionally tears on rapid text scrolling but I'm still experimenting with some of the options (deferred until later at this point though).
With glx I am encountering a race condition during i3wm launch when starting picom, polybar, and nitrogen. The result is that a thick black space appears above the screens. Will detail in a bug after this comment.

What options do you have to use, because picom won't work correctly otherwise?

I don't know if picom won't work correctly otherwise but these are my general settings:

Probably could improve performance on rapid window content changes,

but is known to break things on some drivers (LLVMpipe, xf86-video-intel, etc.).

Disable the use of damage information.

This cause the whole screen to be redrawn everytime, instead of the part of the screen

has actually changed. Potentially degrades the performance, but might fix some artifacts.

calls are finished before picom starts drawing. Needed on nvidia-drivers

Does both backends ( and glx) work? How do they perform?
Both backends and glx seem to work when not using the prime-run command to offload to the NVIDIA dedicated GPU.
When using prime-run picom with any of the backend options, only a black screen shows with a mouse cursor)
All backends seem to perform very well on the Ryzen 9 4900HS, no tearing, no lag when moving transparent windows.

What options do you have to use, because picom won't work correctly otherwise?
Can't use NVIDIA-PRIME (see answer above)

Here it looks like picom is succesfully offloaded to the NVIDIA card, but it ends up with a black screen and just a mouse cursor.

I am considering bumping the minimum OpenGL version to ~4.5. I noticed a couple of users reported (5 years ago) that their GPU only supported up to OpenGL 3.3. I'd like to know if that's still the case, or if they had a chance to upgrade their GPUs?

Update: based on feedback I think this is off the table at the moment.

I run a steam deck and a hp pavilion 15 they both get better battery out of opengl 3.3 or older 2.0. I think this would be bad to do for laptop and battery based Linux use on rpi.

My laptop with GT330 only supports opengl 3.3 and I use picom.
