The updatemaiontainer script links https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebianMaintainerField as its 'policy'. The page is also linked from this LP blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/debian-maintainer-field

What's the best way to preserve the content (provided it needs preserving at all)?

I don't think much of the original wiki content needs preserving. I do think it important the bits documenting that this decision was taken after discussion with Debian, and serves to maintain a good relationship with Debian, are preserved. If only to have something we can refer to in the event someone proposes to drop / alter our handling of the maintainer field (e.g. if it is perceived as burdensome we can say this is why it is this way, and if we want to change it, that there is another party that needs to be involved in that discussion).

I'll have a look through the docs and see where update-maintainer is referenced. If it's only a few places, maybe one of them is a natural fit for this note; otherwise, it may be worth documenting the tool briefly and linking to those docs from the places it's referenced.
