Do destination plugins require settings to work?

Relevant code that checks for settings:

Most documentation suggests adding plugins like this (using Firebase destination plugin as the example):

segmentClient.add({ plugin: new FirebasePlugin() });

But, from some of my testing it seems that I need something like this instead for it to work:

segmentClient.add({ plugin: new FirebasePlugin(), settings: true });

Am I missing something?

Oops, looks like i missued a duplicate issue: #717
