Overview of the things I'd like to see in Ditherista in the future. Since this is a hobby project, there aren't any dates in this roadmap.

Short Term

• check for updates
• zoom image in and out
• numerical inputs for gamma, brightness, contrast
• convert entire directory (or single other image) with current settings

Mid Term

• respect source image transparency and output dithered images with transparency
• command line support

Long Term

• color dithering
• use external palette files (e.g. from Lospec.com)
• have multiple tabs open with dithered images
• allow selecting an area of the dithered image that can be saved or copied to another app

Update for June 2025

I'm getting close to a release. The following features are currently being finalized:

• color dithering! - error diffusion and ordered
• 3 palette quantization methods: median cut, Wu, and kd-tree supporting reduction to 2 - 256 colors
• different color comparison modes between original and reduced palette: LAB color distance ('76, '94, 2000), sRGB, HSV, Luminance, Tetrapal
• loading of paint .NET palettes (from lospec.com)
• many built-in color palettes: EGA, CGA, Mac, Amiga, C64, VIC20, Teletext, MSX, NES, Playdate, RiscOS, DPaint, etc.
• palette editing and saving palettes in paint .NET format
• support for transparent palette colors (useful if you make sprites for systems that consider a certain palette index as transparent)
• support for dithering images with transparency (i.e. transparent PNGs)
• picking different colors than black and white for mono ditherers
• zooming in and out
• numerical inputs for sliders
• automatic update check
• dither entire directory of images
• smaller bug fixes and UI improvements

Update for Sept 2025

Potential next features / fixes for full release:

• selection widget to copy out or save selections of the dithered image
• batch processing/dithering of the contents of a directory
• bug fixes: there are still some UI bugs in the Palette tab when resizing the window
• polish: add pictures to help files
• polish: GUI (tooltips, tab order, etc.)
• polish: code cleanup
