Using custom styling for tabs in a tab bar?

Is there currently a way to customize the styling for tabs in a tab bar, specifically the padding, border, hover styling, etc.?

I'm wanting to control these stylings myself without changing things like the tab variant but they seem to only be controlled by built-in logic. I can add things like hover styling to custom tab content, but in that case, it won't get applied to the built-in padding (see below).

I'm not sure if I'm just missing something while looking through the library code, or if this is something that's not supported currently.
