The following is an up-to date list of known issues and planned changes.

• have the Summary view remember where it was
• if api key is not saved in the html file, show a prompt for setting it for this session. This would make it easier for n00bs while also allow running the page from https://kurupted.github.io/google-maps-timeline-viewer/timeline.html
• when the API cache is saved, the "New" calls count should reset to 0 (?)
• option for 24-hour time format
• Summary view grand totals
• export timeline to csv
• Add a toggle for changing one or both day pickers with the left/right arrows.
• Maybe use a combined/synchronized picker when using two dates.
• Better support for place visits within another place (eg shops at a mall). Should indent these.
• Collapsible sidebar?
• Support for timelineMemory (trips) feature. Placing this at the bottom of the Summary page would make sense to me.

Note

One goal of this project is to have it be as easy as possible to use for non-technical people, so that means nothing to install, no local web server, and as few files as possible.

This project isn't always a high priority for me. I welcome pull requests or other contributions.

For this:

• Add a toggle for changing to a single day picker.
  I'm thinking maybe move the < and > arrows to the Go line, and then adding the toggle to the left of the date picker(s).
  Or maybe vice-versa.

So glad you managed to get the new format working. I just had a 2 week road trip, so good to view it. Big Thanks for your hard work! My feature request. I'd like to download the text list of places on the left. I'd like to be able to change the timezone. All my locations while in New Zealand are in Australian time. So it looks like I went on a cruise at 5:30am instead of 7:30am.

Changing the timezone would be a good feature, yep. I'll add it to the list.

Letting you export a formatted list should be possible, but not something I'm likely to work on. Maybe someone else will contribute code.

Related:
When using the new format, the place names are pulled in dynamically via Google's API, since the files no longer contain it, just ids. I'd like to save the names locally somehow in case Google removes the associated places, but I'm not sure if that can be done without requiring a local webserver, which I'm ruling out for this project.

Hello, I exported the timeline from my phone and I got a file "Timeline.json" (or "Zeitachse.json" in germany). It consists of 3 entries: semanticSegments, rawSignals and userLocationProfile. The interesting thing are the semanticSegments which consist of visit, timelinePath and activity.
But your viewer does not find the data because it assumes that there are many file chunks for the months. The code part

if (timelineData[dataKey]) { }
does not work because the dataKey is just the filename which is "Timeline" or "Zeitachse".

Hi @martin3000,

You bring up a good point about the filename -- I'll update the Readme to note that the file should be called Timeline.json. It didn't occur to me that it would be different with a different language system.

When it loads from a Timeline.json file, it doesn't look for the monthly chunk files -- it only uses that one file.

I tested just now with my Timeline.json and had no issue. If you continue to have an issue, please start a new thread. This thread is for the to-do list and known issues.

I updated the code to use the new Places API. It broke a couple small things (noted in first post) that I'll fix shortly.

Today I released two updates:

First one hopefully adds full iOS support, and fixed some icon issues.

Second one adds the ability to save cached place info (retrieved from the API) to a file, to reduce future API calls, as well as an option to disable API calls entirely, which is good for when you want to display a long period of time at once and don't care about place names etc.

Hey there - love this tool, thanks for making and sharing it. It's super helpful to have this view and be able to scroll through your data like the old Timeline view. One thing I'd like to request, if at all possible, would be to be able to export a day, or range of days (based on your date selections) to a KML or similar file. This was a feature I used frequently in the Google Maps Timeline History page to pull daily data, revise it to get date/time and location info, and incorporate it with other data to have a more fleshed out timeline of my day, like Music history, phone activity, etc. Not super important but would be a great add-on. I haven't found any other tools that get as close as this. Thanks!

I've updated the code to add:

• Hopefully fixed iOS activity paths
• Allow changing the timezone to something other than your current system timezone.
• Show first/last dates available in the data file after loading
• Store last-used data path in indexedDB

@rspengler I've added kml support. Tested by loading into Google Earth and looks ok to my eyes

I also added a km/mi selector, and now store it and the timezone options for next time.
