            <p>로얄 워런트(Royal Warrant)는 왕실 납품 허가증으로, 그 가치가 왕실로부터 인정된 것에 부여되는 증서입니다. 조니 워커, 발렌타인, 저번에 리뷰한 <a title="매거진 입맛 - 사랑하거나 싫어하거나, 피트의 마술적 매력. 라프로익 10년" href="/laphroaig-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">라프로익</a>처럼 스카치 위스키 중에는 로얄 워런트를 가진 브랜드가 꽤 있습니다. 그러나 빅토리아 여왕부터 에드워드 7세, 조지 5세… 지금의 엘리자베스 2세까지 6명의 국왕을 거치는 동안 로얄 워런트를 유지하고 있는 위스키 브랜드는 흔하지 않습니다. 바로 듀어스(Dewars)가 그렇습니다.</p>

<h2 id="듀어스">듀어스</h2>

<p>맥아만으로 만든 싱글 몰트 위스키는 증류소의 개성을 보여주는데 주력하지만, 여러 몰트 위스키와 그레인 위스키를 섞은 블렌디드 위스키는 일정하고 조화로운 맛을 내는데 초점이 맞춰져 있습니다. 그러니 싱글 몰트 위스키가 꼭 블렌디드 위스키보다 고품질인 것은 아니고, 블렌디드 위스키가 싱글 몰트 위스키보다 맛있을 때도 있습니다. 듀어스도 이와 같은 블렌디드 위스키 브랜드 중 하나입니다.</p>

<p>듀어스의 켈트스러운 로고는 세 듀어의 이름 앞글자 D를 엮어 만들었습니다. 바로 존 듀어(John Dewar), 존 알렉산더 듀어(John Alexander Dewar), 그리고 토마스 로버트 듀어(Thomas Robert Dewar)입니다. 창업자와 그의 두 아들 형제입니다.</p>

<p>블렌디드 위스키 브랜드는 잡화점에서 기원하는 경우가 많습니다. 19세기 중후반 스코틀랜드의 잡화점은 각지의 위스키를 납품받아 직접 블렌딩해 판매하고는 했습니다. 1846년 창업한 듀어스 역시 스코틀랜드 퍼스(Perth)의 가게에서 시작되었습니다. 창업자 존 듀어에 이어 회사를 경영하게 된 존 알렉산더 듀어와 토마스 로버트 듀어 형제 대에서 브랜드는 번창합니다.</p>

<p>동생 토마스는 전 세계를 여행하며 수출 판로를 찾았습니다. 대표적인 실적으로는 미국 백악관 납품을 꼽을 수 있습니다. 2년간 26개국을 여행한 토마스는 &lt;A Ramble Round the Globe&gt;라는 책을 내기도 했습니다. 이 책에서 토마스는 자신이 위스키에 탄산수를 섞은 칵테일, 하이볼을 고안했다고 주장했습니다. 형 존은 이 시기 영국 국왕 빅토리아의 로얄 워런티를 받아냅니다. 처음에 언급했듯 이 로얄 워런티는 지금까지 끊이지 않고 갱신되었습니다. 듀어스는 승승장구했습니다. 토마스는 에드워드 7세 때에 기사 작위를 받습니다.</p>

<h2 id="듀어스-12년">듀어스 12년</h2>

<p>스카치 위스키 협회의 규정에 따라 블렌디드 스카치 위스키는 섞은 위스키 중 가장 짧은 숙성 기간을 거친 위스키의 숙성 연수를 표기해야 합니다. 즉 듀어스 12년에는 적어도 12년 이상의 숙성을 거친 위스키만 포함된 것입니다.</p>

<p><strong>색</strong> 어느 정도 무게감 있는 보리색을 띄어, 얇고 쉽게 내려가는 레그와 대조적인 분위기를 냅니다.</p>

<p><strong>향</strong> 밝고 화사한 사과향, 식초 냄새가 단번에 느껴집니다. 가볍고 상큼합니다. 신선한 꿀과 바닐라 쿠키 냄새가 옅게 베어있습니다. 이슬 묻은 풀꽃을 연상시키는 감미로움과 쾌청함이 공존합니다. 아삭아삭한 과일내음 저편에 날카로운 알코올 냄새가 웅크리고 있습니다. 경쾌한 개성을 느낄 수 있는 향입니다.</p>

<p><strong>맛</strong> 향에 비해 산도는 적지만, 그럼에도 어태까지 마셔봤던 것 중에서는 독보적인 신맛입니다. 체리, 계피를 떠올리게 하는 단맛과 일관된 사과맛이 올라옵니다. 역시 가볍습니다. 블렌딩 전후로 숙성시키는 듀어스의 더블 에이지드(Double Aged) 덕분인지 상당히 부드럽습니다.</p>

<p><strong>피니쉬</strong> 드라이하고 짧습니다. 시큼한 맛의 흔적만큼은 분명하게 남습니다. 텁텁한 입을 쩝쩝대다보면 레몬 껍질의 씁쓸한 신맛이 올라옵니다.</p>

<h2 id="한겨울에-피는-여름-햇살">한겨울에 피는 여름 햇살</h2>

<p>가볍고 화사한 듀어스 12년은 니트는 물론 하이볼로도 즐겁게 마실 수 있습니다. 밝은 과실 향기가 편하게 늘어져 맞는 여름 햇볕을 연상시킵니다. 듀어스 한 잔으로 눈 내리는 한겨울 속에서도 무더운 휴양지에서 느낄 법한 기분을 낼 수 있습니다.</p>
