At minimum, the ability to do multi-facet browsing feels very needed to me, so that users can limit results by i.e. institution and language, date silders, etc. This is necessary for our research users but I think also for more casual ones as well, particularly at the level of say ability to sort and filter by date as right now the various thematic facets (which cannot be combined) are the only way in for users without simple search.

Would also love to discuss implementing search for interpretive content as well, requested by @hkemp2128

Let's split this out into two issues since they are quite different: advance search/faceting for maps (which will still need to query DC API) and a search modality for ARGO-specific content (which will require a frontend index and searching solution.) I will create new issue for the latter and we can keep the former here.

I think we really want to prioritize which query parameters we really want to have as inputs to the search, and which ones we want to be able to facet by after a search has been executed. I feel pretty strongly that we should not rebuild the full advanced search functionality present in LMEC Digital Collections/Digital Commonwealth, both for UX reasons and because it will be brittle.

My initial suggestions would be:

Parameters needed as search control inputs

• Date (single year, "before", "after," and "between")
• Holding institution
• Ability for the text query to operate as: general search (i.e., current practice), search only titles, search only creators

Useful post-search facets/filters

• Language
• Holding institution
• Scale (will need to discuss if we use cataloging information or computationally infer from bbox)

I'd be very happy with that for at least a start -- holding institution, date controls, and ability to search creators specifically strike me as the most important aspects. Would be nice to have some kind of additional place filter but I suspect e.g. incorporating facets and parameters into the search by map function would be a giant headache.

List looks good to me! I'd imagine adding in some of our metadata tags would be useful to search by as well; I know not all would be useful off the bat but including differentiating between manuscript/printed maps, non-map materials, etc. I think would be helpful additions to search faceting.
