Resource Name

Trilium / TriliumNext

Resource Type

Notetaking

Resource Description

It's akin to Obsidian and other systems, but it offers a huge amount of flexibility. Notes can be linked in multiple places, so that, for example, if it's a note about a project but also part of a broader topic, the note can be linked in both places as it makes sense. It also offers a local-first experience with the option of a sync server to allow notes to be usable on multiple devices and the web.

Additional Information

It's free and open-source, so no cost to the application or its sync server, as long as you have an existing server to put it on. Self-hosting means that you can take your notes with you, and you're not stuck using a platform which can cut you off from your notes or put them behind a paywall.

Why do you recommend it?

There are so many features to cover; I'll note just one here. It has a built-in calendar/journal feature so that you can track your days. I created a template (the Day template) so that for each new calendar day I use the daily note features has a structure which includes space for Planned Tasks, Unplanned Tasks, and Notes. You could use it as a personal journal or gratitude journal. It has actual checkboxes for marking tasks off.

Is there a cost associated with this resource?

It's free to use the desktop application and the server software. You would need an Internet-facing server for the sync software to sync up to other devices (including your phone). There might be cost here. You can also spend a few dollars a month and have one of a couple of folks host the server for you, at a nominal cost.
