Set up deployment of maven artifacts

We used to deploy a maven artifact (to INESC TEC's gitlab) but have stopped doing this because the InterConnect project has finished.
We would like to start uploading maven artifacts again, preferably on github?

Part of this issue may also be to update the remote repositories that have been defined in the pom.xmls as they are currently still set to INESC TEC's gitlab.

Note that the maven-release-plugin can help out greatly when releasing maven based artifacts. We're not sure whether it is still recommended and is compatible with GitHub.
