The default way of displaying tabs can be a bit disorienting, as you can have multiple tabs open and can switch between them, making the displays jump and have the user lose a bit of focus on where they are or what the amount of open tabs is, where which one is etc.
The default could be a different one, as the horizontal and vertical options give a little bit of a better overview. Another option would be to add more information to the tray option or have status messages/alerts improve this interaction.
